10 Common Care Home Myths Busted

For many, the idea of a care home still carries outdated notions—images of quiet corridors, lost independence, or loneliness. But step inside one of our care homes today, and you’ll likely find something very different: laughter, friendships, creative activities, and communities full of purpose and person-centred care.

At Anavo, we believe in real care, real stories, and that starts by challenging the myths that still surround care homes. Here are ten of the most common misconceptions—and the truth behind them:

Myth 1: Care homes are only for elderly people, the very ill or at the end of life.

Truth: Care homes support a wide range of people — not just the elderly or those with severe health issues. Many residents are active, social, and simply need some assistance with daily tasks.

Care homes offer supportive, social living for a variety of people and needs. Whether you’re in need of short-term post operative care, you’re recovering from an illness, you’re seeking companionship or just need a little daily help, our care homes support residents to live vibrant, independent lives.

Myth 2: Care home food is unpleasant

Truth: We provide highly tailored, seasonal, nutritious, balanced menus designed by Chef and resident.

Chefs and catering teams at the home are qualified and highly trained in food safety, nutrition and hydration for older people. They often work alongside other professionals including nutritionists and speech therapists to ensure residents’ diets can support their health.

They also take into consideration our residents’ favourite meals, ensuring they get a taste of home.

Myth 3: You lose your independence.

Truth: At Anavo, we empower residents to lead fulfilling, independent lives by listening, enabling choice, driving a sense of purpose and creating meaningful experiences shaped by their interests. Residents are encouraged to make choices about how they spend their time, get involved in activities, and continue doing the things they love.
We provide outings and a variety of activities chosen by our residents – tailored to them.

Myth 4: There’s no privacy in a care home

Truth: Privacy and dignity are a top priority in our care homes. Residents have their own rooms, often with ensuite bathrooms, and can choose when and how to engage with others.
Staff are trained to respect personal space and routines, and residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms to feel truly at home.
Just like anyone else, they decide who they welcome into their space and when.

Myth 5: I won’t be able to get my hair cut or nails done.

Truth: Many people worry that moving into a care home means giving up their identity and the small routines that help them feel like themselves—such as getting a haircut, having their nails done, or enjoying a bit of pampering. But in reality, our care homes understand just how important these things are for wellbeing, confidence, and dignity. That’s why we offer on-site hairdressers and beauty services as part of their regular activities. Some of our homes even have dedicated salons.

Myth6: Families put people in care homes because they don’t care.

Truth: This couldn’t be further from the truth. Choosing a care home is often a difficult decision.
Most families choose a care home because they love their relative and want them to have the best possible care and quality of life. It’s not about giving up — it’s about ensuring a loved one receives the support, safety, and companionship they need.
Many families stay closely involved, visiting often and remaining active in their loved one’s life. Seeking extra help isn’t neglect — it’s an act of love.

Myth 7: People in care homes are lonely, bored & depressed.

Truth: Our homes are vibrant communities. We learn about people’s preferences and tailor activities, trips, and shared moments to help residents connect, thrive, and build lasting friendships. We bring people together while respecting boundaries and wishes. Many residents find more social connection than they had before moving in and gain a new hobby or skill.

Myth 8: Care homes are too expensive for most people.

Truth: While care does come with a cost, there are wide range of options available to suit different financial situations. Many people are eligible for local authority funding or support from the NHS, depending on their needs and circumstances.
Our teams are here to help families navigate care costs with clarity—offering guidance, support, and clarifying funding options. Ultimately our goal is to make quality care accessible and sustainable for all.

Myth 9: Care homes are all the same.

Truth: In truth, no two care homes are alike — and at Anavo, we pride ourselves on creating warm, welcoming environments that reflect the unique needs and personalities of our residents. From the style of our homes and the activities we offer to the way we deliver care, everything is tailored to create a supportive, fulfilling experience.

Each Anavo home has its own character, but all share the same commitment to high-quality, person-centred care that provides a sense of purpose.

Myth 10: The care isn’t personal or high quality.

Truth: We believe care should be as individual as the people we support. Our teams take the time to get to know each resident — their routines, preferences, needs, life history, and what matters most to them. This allows us to provide genuinely person-centred care that respects dignity, promotes independence, and feels like home. We’re committed to the highest standards of care, with regular training, quality checks, and a culture of compassion that puts people first, always. We empower our residents to have their say choosing how they are cared for and providing valuable feedback. Some of our homes even have resident ambassadors to hold us to account.

At Anavo, we’re redefining what care means. Care homes aren’t just places to be looked after—they’re places to live fully, with purpose, choice, and joy.
